BEGINNERS

As a beginner, there are some things you should learn that are common to all styles of music.  You will be asked to answer some questions about your goals so that I can better help you to achieve satisfactory results.

You should strive to achieve a beginning proficiency level 4 in each area in the list below within a given time frame.  (See proficiency scale on bottom of page.)

This will help you on your way to playing any type of music you desire.

 

INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED

Proficiency levels for intermediate and advanced students will be outlined for each student depending upon their individual goals. The techniques below will be covered in more depth and finely tuned, and others will be added.

 

Posture

* Holding the violin comfortably between chin and shoulder

* Placing the violin neck on correct pivot points

* Fingering with rounded fingers on their tips

* Secure thumb and finger placement on the bow

* Wrist motions with traveling bow

* Alignment of elbow and wrist at different parts of the bow

Mechanics

* Placing fingers accurately on the fingerboard

* Crossing the strings with the bow

* Playing various rhythms with the bow

* Slurring and bouncing with the bow

* Bowing two strings together

* Double-stopping (chords) with the fingers and the bow

Theory

* Understanding basic music notation and symbols

* Recognizing notes on the staff

* Understanding meter and rhythm

* Working with various note values

* Understanding scales and runs, arpeggios and chords

* Recognizing note patterns for ease of reading

Beginning Proficiency Levels

0 - Cannot explain or demonstrate the technique

1 - Can explain the technique to others

2 - Can demonstrate the technique sometimes

3 - Can demonstrate the technique repeatedly

4 - Can demonstrate the technique consistently
