Of course you will need a  violin, case and bow.  If you do not already own a violin, I suggest you rent or borrow one for a few months.  You will have a better idea of what you want when it comes time to purchase one.  Some resources for renting and purchasing violins are listed on my Music Resources page.

Fitting the Violin

Most stores that sell violins will be able to fit your child for the correct size.  They will have the child hold the instrument between the chin and shoulder, and then reach out under the violin and wrap the hand around the scroll.  The elbow should be slightly bent.

Following is a chart of estimated sizes:

             Ages 2-4             1/16-size

             Ages 4-6             1/8-size

             Ages 6-8             1/4-size

             Ages 8-11           1/2-size

             Ages 11-13         3/4-size

             Ages 13+            Full-size

Many petite girls and women choose to stay with a 3/4-size.  For growing children, I would suggest going with the larger size violin if it seems like it almost fits.

The Bow and Case

A bow and violin case are usually included with your violin rental.  If purchasing a violin, they may not be included.  Bows and violins have a wide range of prices - and usually reflect the quality of the instrument.  However, you can sometimes pick up fine instruments through personal classified advertisements and auctions.

Some additional accessories will be needed.  If you are purchasing them, here are my suggestions:

Rosin (Hill brand, dark)

Usually the rosin will be included when renting a violin.

Shoulder Rest (KUN)

If violin is 3/4-size, you should purchase the full-size shoulder rest.  They are adjustable to fit both sizes.  There are a number of styles available, including collapsible feet and tilt feature.  There are less expensive brands, but I have found KUN to be superior.

Electronic tuner

Any music store carries these.

Music stand

Any inexpensive folding stand will do.

CD-RW, or flash drive

If you choose to take advantage of the computer learning tools, you will also need to make sure you computer has enough RAM.
